A former colleague of mine from the advertising world pointed me to a sexist Microsoft OneNote commercial. “Watch it and weep,” was the only message in her email. So I did, and then I found a short article on Slate technology similarly critical of the commercial (link at the bottom). The whole ad is basically based on the idea that women will choose the OneNote over a Mac because it has a touchscreen, is affordable, but mostly, because it is “perfect for planning their wedding.” That’s right ladies… this computer makes it easier to do all of the girly things we besotted and befuddled women love to do. The woman in the ad wisely comments that the OneNote allows her friends to enjoy Pinterest and compare wedding bands on a large screen rather than a tiny tablet screen. Then the ad closes with a lame joke about her wishing her friends liked their bridesmaid dresses as much as they like her computer.
Like the author of the article, I will let the ad speak for itself. I will say I find it distressing that Microsoft would promote such an egregious stereotype
