I had never seen anyone use Prezi until I started my first semester at NYU. All of a sudden I witnessed several of my classmates using this funky new tool for their presentations. I really liked the fact that it wasn’t linear, but the constant zooming and movement at times was a little dizzying (though I still thought it was cool). So I took the opportunity to try out this authoring tool.
I really loved that the online version of Prezi is free. It is also intuitive enough that it could be used by beginners, younger kids or technologically challenged people like me. Because it allows for movement, color, zooming and different designs, it looks and feels fresh and I think might be more entertaining than your average Power Point.
Prezi might present some challenges. If you want your own computer version, you have to pay over $150 a year, which is steep. Also, like I said before, if there are too many zooms, Prezi can make you kind of dizzy. It also seems to me that there could be situations, like a formal corporate meeting, that might call for a more “serious” presentation format, in which case Power Point might work better than the more whimsical Prezi.
All in all, I am intrigued. The next time I present in class I will endeavor to use Prezi. I want to see how it goes and whether I enjoy using it for a real project. Before starting school I had been working for the past 6 years and had only used Power Point as my sole presentation tool. So this will be a welcome change for me, as well as a lot of fun.
