It’s hard to compete with Google the search engine. After all, it’s now so popular it has become a verb. Interestingly enough, Google generates more revenue through its use as a search engine on Apple devices than it does through its own Android devices. So it has a vested interest in remaining a verb we use every day.
However, it seems that Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, is vying for the opportunity to be the default browser on Apple devices. If successful, the move would mean a new era for Yahoo. Not only would it be able to grow its advertising business, it would also gain brand recognition by being in the minds of Apple consumers. Now of course, the task won’t be easy. To land this deal, Yahoo would have to show that the end user would experience a definite benefit by using its search engine, which is hard to do when you are up against Google.
So while this is still all hearsay, it has the potential to be a groundbreaking development that could really deal a harsh blow to Google. If the company loses search engine customers, it uses data, and Google makes money off turning user date into revenue. It remains to be seen if in a few years we will be saying: “Can you yahoo that?”
