I found a really wonderful tool for my 3-minute demo. Speech Peak is a website that allows you to design listening comprehension and speaking exercises for your students. Once the lesson is designed, the students use a link to access the lesson, fill out their answers (in written or audio format), and the teacher can grade and provide other feedback online.
This tool presents a number of advantages. First, it is a great way to create digital assignments that can be accessed anywhere. The students receive personalized feedback online as quickly as the teacher can provide it. Additionally, it is a great way for students to practice speaking and listening, which are the two skills that usually get shortchanged in the language classroom. The lesson I built was to help Spanish-speaking EFL students overcome L1 interference when producing certain sounds that are very particular to English. The students are able to record and listen to themselves, making changes and monitoring their own production in order to improve pronunciation. Once the assignment is finished, as a teacher I could then provide the students with recordings of my own voice reciting these sentences, so they could have a “Master” audio to compare themselves with.
I felt that this was an immensely helpful tool, one that I think will come in handy when I begin teaching.
